College Lawn Hotel
Editorial
Greville Street is iconic to its Prahran setting, bringing to it a sense of the Northside’s vitality for edginess. It’s kind of Prahran’s answer to Fitzroy’s Gertrude Street, where an eclectic mixture of fashion boutiques, hairdressers, bookshops, retro stores, tiny cafes and iconic bars attract an uber-cool collection of Prahran poseurs. Flying in the face of this vanity-driven, fashion-drenched scene is the College Lawn Hotel, a comparatively unpretentious, low key local pub that the afore-mentioned seem to bypass. Here you will find a more casual and laidback sartorial approach to go with the traditional charm of big games on the big screen, pool tables and slab raffles. It is a pub after all.
Local and imported beers such as Tooheys New, Hahn Premium, Carlton, Asahi, Guinness and Heineken are all available on tap, along with bottled imports. The wine list is as full as a pommie complaint box, with plenty of top shelf fare for those so inclined. As traditional pubs go, the College Lawn boasts a lounge bar, public bar, function room, bottle-shop, and two courtyards. Bar snacks are available, but for a heartier meal, a restaurant serves inexpensive top-notch grub. Just to add punch to the party, backpacker accommodation is on offer too. Starting at $24 a night for this central Prahran location, it all works out rather nicely.
