Salford Lads Club is bizarrely tucked away in a Port Melbourne industrial estate, but well worth seeking out for cool atmosphere, fantastic coffee and great food at refreshing prices

Port Melbourne is not an area I'm familiar with, but somehow I decided I could navigate my way on foot to the recently opened Salford Lads Club (a sly reference to The Smiths). This somewhat hilarious and mammoth undertaking involved trudging through industrial wilderness using my iPhone as a compass.

The destination was well worth the quest thankfully. The garage-like structure is signposted by an almost fairytale tree outside complete with tire swing. Inside is lusciously light-filled with quirky art pieces and pushbikes hanging from brick walls. Chunky wooden tables are spaciously arranged on a stone parquet floor.

Salford opened in this rather odd spot apparently as part of a deal with a skateboard production warehouse just up the road and despite the out of the way location the place was packed for Wednesday lunch.

The quirky staff are very friendly and produce the goods to back it up too. I had a beautifully creamy latte whipped up on a custom-made hot pink San Marco machine using South Blend Supreme coffee, followed by a deliciously rich espresso with perfect crema. My Japanese Curry was equally impressive, with intoxicatingly fresh flavours, served rather cutely by the chef himself.

Everyone seems to muck in together as a real team here, and the atmosphere benefits. I've been toying with the idea of getting motorbike, and if I do I will certainly be going out of my way to drop into Salford again.
