When was the last time you treated yourself to a day at the Zoo? Maybe it's time you did again, then.

The Melbourne Zoo has been in Royal Park since 1862, and of course has gone through some fairly major changes. Gone are the original circus-like cages modelled on the Victorian-era London Zoo, and the original exhibits of monkeys, bears and lions, and now over 300 species of animals - both exotic and native - are housed at the zoo.

The Zoo now boasts some impressive new developments, including the award-winning Trail of the Elephants. This is an Asian village and garden setting that allows visitors to enter the elephant's environment and see first-hand how conservationists are looking to save and protect wildlife and their natural habitats while incorporating the world's growing population's need to expand.

There's also the Orang-Utan Sanctuary, where visitors can watch up close and personal the primates in a natural habitat, and the Sumatran Tigers, all part of the Asian Rainforest development; the Tree Kangaroos, native to Australia and Papua New Guinea, the famous Butterfly House; and coming soon, a new enclosure for the Fur Seals, penguins and other marine life.

You could always spend a night in the Zoo itself. Roar 'n' Snore includes meals, a sleepover in the old 1940s Elephant House and the chance to explore the zoo after dark. Or you can hire the function centre for your wedding or any other occasion; birthday parties and adventure programmes are available for kids, and in summer, there are the Roar Sounds and Zoo Twilight programmes. Enough to stay for more than a day, actually…
