Dinner and a movie couldn’t be easier for Northcote locals with Taxiboat’s pan-Asian restaurant fare on offer directly opposite the Westgarth Theatre.

Editorial

Named for the boats that trawl most of Asia’s major waterways, Taxiboat picks and chooses some of the highlights of this large and varied range of cuisines, creating its own style of Eastern fusion. Heavy timber furniture and dark walls with tasteful red accents throughout make the small front dining room and adjoining function room an inviting space all year around, while the seasonal menu showcases some Asian favourites and a variety of house specialties. Choose from a large selection of traditional Chinese dumplings which have rapidly become a house specialty or try the house made spring rolls or spiced crispy quail with garlic, five spice and fresh chilli, to start.

Lovers of Asian food will be hard-pressed to pick a favourite from the larger share plates such as pad Thai, Szechuan beef, teriyaki chicken or red duck curry, but a definite standout is the sesame beef, with succulent, marbled cubes of Wagyu beef wok-tossed with garlic and sesame. Many dishes are also available as vegetarian options. Friendly staff, a good selection of wines – many available by the glass – and a great Asian-inspired cocktail list (try a Sake Capiroska or the Taxiboat Mojito with fresh coriander) round out an ideal pre- or post-film dining destination. Come along for the yum cha on the first Sunday of every month for a chance to sample all the delights of the menu in one sitting.
