UBar

Travel can broaden the mind. And, potentially, damage the liver in this backpackers’ late opener.

Editorial

The bar at the All Nations backpacker hostel is a lot like the United Nations. Or, at the least, it would be if the United Nations had cheap drinks, a late licence and special theme nights that required blokes to dress up in ladies' undergarments. And, of course, if the United Nations was exclusively staffed by people under the age of 25 whose sole if fleeting mission is to represent their state in an international drinking competition.

In other words, the U-Bar is a backpackers' bar. The beer is cheap, the crowd is lively and, at some point or another every evening, an Irish national will insist that everyone listens to U2.

Sundry global holidays are celebrated here with backpacker bonhomie. Is it the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands? Let's drink Dutch beer. Is it a Mexican day of political independence? Let's have a Corona. And a Tequila. And another look at the calendar just to make sure there's not something happening in Germany tomorrow. Let's drink Bavaria dry.

All the diversions you'd expect in any place that plays host to young western travellers are here. There is pool. There are quiz nights. Sometimes, there's an offer of something called a “free goon”. If you have to ask what that is, you're probably not the sort of person who wants it.
