Not in Melbourne?

Transit

Not so far from the madding crowds, but far enough to save the mildly anxious.

Editorial

Praise be to the marketing genie who conjured this top floor oasis. If this relative quiet didn't exist, relatively quiet people might be forced to build it. It's soothing, is wood panelled and has table service. You don't risk spilling a drink anywhere but in your mouth.

Melbourne, of course, is host to many such languid, loungey joints. But they're not quite so close to the Transport hubbub. An elevator ride can take you from Bacchanalia to a comparative tea dance in no time flat.

Down at ground level, the degree zero of social drinking unfolds. While stable-mate Transport rocks and reels, this cocktail bar rolls just a little more gently. For those who'd rather poke themselves in the eye with a steak knife than juggle drinks through a maze of people and a blare of this month's Most Downloaded hits, Transit is a welcome escape.

This is not, for a moment, to imply that Transit is under-populated. The gentle secret was divulged long ago. When someone's inner-Nanna realised she could order a lovely cocktail and a corned beef sandwich as a young man in a suit crooned at tolerable level, she told all her friends.

For refuge from the pace of Federation Square, Transit is a great retirement option.
