The Metropolitan, an elegant yet contemporary venue on the edge of the legal precinct of the CBD offers a sense of style long missing from this end of town. Open from 8am Monday-Friday for lunch and dinner and offering an in-between menu of light sweet and savoury snacks and great coffee, the Hotel transforms itself according to the time of day.
Editorial
For over 150 years this Melbourne landmark hotel has been pleasing its punters with traditional and less than traditional Australian and international fare in sleek surroundings. Situated in the legal precinct, The Metropolitan Hotel is the perfect spot for a light breakfast, lunch among the local office workers, or dinner for two or more. Sample one of many tempting beers on tap while admiring the unique handcrafted bronze fonts, before relaxing in the dining room on chocolate-coloured, leather-backed seats at pristine, white, linen-clad tables.
Head chef Mark Rudaz has created a menu that will easily please even the most discerning diner and delight those on a budget. Start your weekday morning with the eggs Florentine comprising two poached eggs, sauteed spinach and hollandaise on toasted English muffins with a glass of OJ. Snack on the antipasto of baby arancinis, balsamic tomatoes, spicy salami, marinated olives and fetta (ideal for sharing), or an Aussie favourite: shaved leg ham and pineapple wood-fired oven pizza. More substantial offerings include the crispy skinned Atlantic salmon on steamed vegetables with an avocado and tomato salsa, or pork and fennel sausages served on creamy mash potato with a barbecue sauce. Be sure to leave room for the lemon tart with pure cream.
