Featuring five individual performance spaces, the Arts Centre offers a diverse range of entertainment experiences, from the exquisite string sounds of Hamer Hall, to journeys of discovery in the experimental BlackBox theatre and Shakespearean drama at the Playhouse.
The larger State Theatre also hosts the city's major artistic performances, from leading dance and Broadway musicals to grand opera productions. Seating around 2,000 people, it has one of the largest stages in the world, with a ceiling decorated with 75,000 tiny brass domes, and is also home to Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet.
The more intimate Fairfax Studio hosts events by the Melbourne Theatre Company and smaller contemporary productions, including an annual season of experimental short plays.
The Centre also has two galleries, featuring exhibitions that complement the diverse program of events, as well as permanent works such as Jeffrey Smart's Container Train in Landscape and a significant collection of Aboriginal paintings from the Western Desert.
With two cafes on site, the Mezz Bar, which is located on the mezzanine level opens prior to each performance and offers a Mediterranean tapas-style menu. Alternatively, the Curve Bar, located on street level is open Monday to Saturday, offering a selection of shared plates and premium wines, with al fresco dining during the warmer months.
Out on the forecourt, grab a quick bite to eat, or a coffee, and don't miss the famous Spiegeltent when it's in town, hosting some of the world's greatest cabaret performers and musicians.
