Siglo Bar
Editorial
Located on the rooftop of one of Melbourne's iconic eateries, and upstairs from the Supper Club (another of Melbourne's superb later-night drinking dens), is Siglo, a rooftop bar that started out in life with the purpose of re-installing human rights to those of us that enjoy a cigar or cigarette with our drinks. However, to describe Siglo simply as a bar where you can smoke is one of life's grand understatements.
Accessed through a non-descript brown door (also leading to the Supper Club), followed by two flights of stairs, your climbing expectations are met by a glassed area housing the main bar and an impressive selection of cigars and cognacs, before opening into a fabulous terrace, giving the impression you've stumbled upon something straight out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The vibe is further enhanced by immaculately attired and perfectly mannered waitstaff, only too willing to assist with all matters concerning the endless selection of drinks. Old-world wines take pride of place, accompanied by an exhausting list of beers and cocktail concoctions that travel through time, from the shaken-not-stirred variety of old to the refreshingly modern. A modest selection of late- night dining options are also available with notable European influences.
Siglo's management have taken pains to ensure that this remain a year-round destination, and thanks to carefully placed gas heaters and awnings, the idea of drinking one of the world's finest cognacs, cigar in hand high among the rooftops overlooking state parliament discussing all things important with theatre types and Spring Street powerbrokers late into the evening no longer belongs in the pages of a bygone novel. At Siglo, the night is always tender - or is that Tender is the Night?
