Section 8

Urban cool meets the city’s artistic set in a grooved-up former carpark.

Editorial

Is a bar made of shipping containers taking the industrial look too far? Ask any arty young Melburnite and they will tell you, hell no!

When Section 8 Container Bar opened in 2006, many a doubter sniggered at the idea of a bar with no wall or roof in a city not known for it convivial weather. In fact the only solid constructions are the shipping containers themselves. One functions as the bar while the other is the amenities. What the doubters didn't take into account is the fact that this city is not low in numbers when it comes to the self-consciously groovy. Culturally informed urbanites flocked there in droves, and they still do.

While a steel and corrugated iron structure now covers some areas, Section 8 has lost none of its appeal. It's a little bit Berlin with a dash of New York, and the hipsters know it. Pull up a packing crate (preferably one with a cushion) and nestle in amongst the steel drums, Chinese lanterns and scattered palms. Maybe critique the surrounding graffiti or stencil art, and definitely give over to the music. This bar features some pretty cool DJs.

Beer is the go at Section 8. Melbourne Bitter, (always the sign of Melbourne cool) suits the student set while a Trumer Pilsner (Germany) or a Dos Equis (Mexico) will satisfy those with more complex tastes. Having said that, their Mojitos are among the best in town.

Not just a bar, Section 8 also does breakfasts and snacks slow-food style. A perfect remedy for those needing a gentle start to the day.

I reguarly go here for a sneaky hot chocolate during the day and then a chilled out drink for the night. Great Staff and good hidden location.

Im thinking that Section 8 may have become a victim of its own success... doormen counting folk in and out, queues and even being refused entry for no apparent reason. Was a great find before it was found by the masses. Still great in the afternoon or early/late though.

big fail at Section 8 yesterday. It's just opposite our office so a post work drink. A staff member asks one of your party to please remove their tie. Firstly, stupid "rule" for a city bar on a weeknight, but ok, that's their wanky preference to reject entry, but not cool to come up after an hour and ask. Embarrasing for us all, so we left. Section 8 #Fail #wankers
