Salto Cafe Bistro
Editorial
Located in the south-west corner of Melbourne’s CBD, Salto is a daytime eatery with a simple yet cosmopolitan feel. Selected sculptures and artwork add modernity and sophistication, while Salto’s open, split-level plan offers the versatility of separate morning cafe and lunch bistro areas. Outside dining on the quiet and calming Little Collins Street is also available.
Salto’s menu is modest but thoughtfully compiled, and produce is of a high quality. Elegant and creative dishes such as the Egyptian-spiced fishcakes with fennel and preserved lemon salad or the risotto with roast duck and field mushrooms are well priced at under $20, while the more down-to-earth punter can still enjoy a scrumptious steak sandwich with tasty haloumi cheese and eggplant relish. Several vegetarian options are also available. Salto’s wine selection is unboastful but does the job nicely, with glasses of white and red starting from just $5 and pricier options at $10. With delightful and professional staff in the mix, it is no surprise Salto is a destination restaurant for quick delicious breakfasts or more formal corporate lunches, all in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.
