Designed by renowned architect Walter Burley Griffin, the Capitol Theatre first opened its glamorous doors in 1924 during an interwar period where 'Chicagoesque' architecture was all the rage.

Editorial

Undergoing remodelling in the 1960s and again in 2005 by the trendy Six Degrees Architecture firm, the Capitol remains a landmark Melbourne theatre. In fact, to describe its 600 seat interior as opulent is probably one of life's great understatements. Adding to an all-round aura of fabulousness is the fact there's hardly a bad seat in the house, reminding us it's still one of Melbourne's best theatres to catch a movie.

The Capitol was purchased by RMIT University in 1999 and has since been used for lectures, festivals and events for RMIT and the general public. If you want to impress your friends, don't forget to tell them the Capitol is a wonderful example of one of the early uses of reinforced concrete and its real dazzler feature is the geometric plaster ceilings.

Despite it being one of the best first movie date locations in Australia, these days the Capitol no longer screens regular releases; instead it's a favourite location to show film festivals (of which Melbourne has hundreds!) and special events. Still, with the claim of being 'The best cinema that was ever built or is ever likely to be built', you'd definitely risk a strange sounding foreign title just to have the Capitol experience under your belt.
