Drinking by the water is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Riverland delivers a unique Melbourne experience.

Editorial

The most astounding aspect of Riverland is why didn't anyone think of this sooner? Here, at last, thanks to those wunderkind architects Six Degrees and the bar's visionary owners, not only have they scored a top posi, but they've given it a distinctly Melbourne feel. While the exposed brick and bluestone of the interior provides a rustic and earthy tone, it's the deck where you'll want to be. For a real Riverland experience, settle on one of their outdoor wooden tables, which resemble an upmarket version of your local park's picnic settings. On a sunny day, large umbrellas will stave off the glare, and the generous offering of gas heaters means you can spend a winter's evening here too.

An excellent wine list spans the globe, with delights such as Hugel Pinot Blanc from Alsace, France ($48) to great homegrown representations from the Eden, Tamar and King valleys. While the vino is reasonably priced, remember when you're handing over $4.50 for a pot of Carlton to turn to the river and just… breath.

Riverland's piece de resistance is their outdoor kitchen. Here grab a gourmet snag, ($8, organic no less), with a generous helping of sauerkraut. During footy season, indulge in a pie floater ($8.50).

On Friday nights, be prepared to fraternise with a significant proportion of the city's workers. On the weekends, the tourists are easily spotted thumbing through their guide books while taking in the Yarra River kayakers and the Arts Centre backdrop.
