Postal Hall Cafe
Editorial
There are a few topics destined to ignite the passions and divide the souls of Melbourne. Actually, there are two. One is football. The other is coffee.
There are those locals who swear by the Italian Bristot blend used at Postal Hall. And, then, there are others who prefer a fresher, local roast. And then, there are fence-sitters like us who enjoy good coffee wherever it is processed and served. For the most part, we have found the coffee here is good, if not better. But, a little inconsistency behind the machine and maybe just a little too much age on the bean mean that, just like the St Kilda Football Club, the place veers from brilliant to bland.
In true, cool Melbourne mien, the Postal Hall is a business that honours the former function of its structure. The former nerve centre of Australia Post, this café does its best to evoke its public service past. Perhaps the uncomfortable seats are part of this bid for historical accuracy.
While not outstanding, the food here is certainly very good. And, it's certainly going to cost you your full city dollar.
In recent years, the postie has dropped his delivery standards. Nonetheless, he retains a faithful retinue of regulars. This is likely down to the cheery, breezy service.
