Platform One

If partying in a tunnel is your idea of a good night out, then you may want to get into this unusual club where the trains thunder overhead.

Editorial

Platform One is hidden away in Banana Alley in two long, domed shaped tunnels that were once loading bays for ships coming up the Yarra River. There's a bunch of odd businesses in these unique buildings, but don't let that fool you: inside it's a vast space that runs the length of the block from Flinders Street all the way back to the riverbank. That means that, despite the nondescript entrance, the interior is 65 metres long, so Platform One possibly offers the longest dance floor in town.

The crowd here is a little older than your usual clubbing crew, and provides a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere, particularly on weekends when it starts to fill up fast. Spread through the two domed spaces, the club is partitioned inside into a few separate rooms, while a good sound and lighting system shows off the unique architecture. There's also a front bar where you first chill out while you get used to the booming of nearby trains (which can sometimes be heard mixing into the sound system early in the night). The venue then stretches through the lengthy dance floor, where you can easily check out the whole crowd, and then opens onto a rear smoking deck that looks across the river to Southbank.

Platform One is also a short walk across the Queensbridge to Crown Casino and you wouldn't be the first to try your luck at the nearby after one too many cocktails. If you're hosting a party, and they happily do functions, you can even charter a boat to drop you off at the back door. Just remember: booze and boats don't mix, unless you're on one of those party boat cruises, in which case, what are you thinking?
