Mrs Parmas

Nowhere in Melbourne will you find a greater dedication to microbews than at Mrs Parmas.

Editorial

Don't let the name fool you; there's more to Mrs Parma's than just chicken schnitzels covered in ham and cheese. As it turns out, this restaurant/bar is seriously dedicated to microbreweries. In fact, they stock nearly 50 varieties of locally produced ales. Not that you'd know any of this from the outside. Or the interior decor. ??Aggressively average' is probably the best way to describe the venue's fit-out. Booth seats, wooden tables and Powderfinger playing on the in-house stereo may be laid-back, but it's hardly going to win awards.

Luckily, there's plenty of beer on hand. So much beer the venue has produced a booklet giving a detailed breakdown of all the variates they stock and the microbreweries they originate from. While some of these have gone on to find fame and fortune (e.g. Mountain Goat), you've probably never heard of half. In any case, the selection is genuinely impressive and you won't find a broader range of local beers anywhere in the CBD.

That being the case, all the other drink options are a bit of an afterthought. Yes, the usual spirits are accounted for and there's a reasonable choice of wines, but at the end of the day people come here for two reasons: beers and parmas. If that's what you're after then Mrs Parma's comes highly recommended.

The great parma search is over, if you can't find a decent parma here, you are not trying. They even cater for vegetarians and gluten avoiders. My pick is the Floater, a parma in the true Adelaide mushy pea tradition. They only serve Victorian Beers, so for a good lunch to chew the fat, discuss Warnie's flipper or Richmond's wooden spoon prospects you cannot go wrong!

Very tasty (and big) parma. Yum. The Prickly Moses wheat beer is worth a try too.

Damn tasty, this Mrs. Parma's restaurant. I had an eggplant parma (vegetarian) that was the side of my head. A bit expensive, but this is place where the blokes can spend a bit of the paycheck and head out for the night.
