Meyers Place Bar
Editorial
Ask any committed Melbourne drinker and they’ll aver: Meyers Place was one of the bars that afforded the city its excellent rep. Long before every licensee and their dog starting serving after-hours mojitos next to a wheelie bin, Meyers was a font of late-night, laneway innovation.
Happily, the place continues to do that which it has always done impeccably well. To wit: serving a large number of drinks in a hot, tiny space while maintaining a cool reputation.
There’s a deft, relaxed irony at play at Meyers that many bars strive, and fail, to mimic. This bar dares, for example, not to serve impeccable tapas. Instead of Serrano ham and Spanish olives, you can order a small plate of supermarket quality processed meat and cheese. It’s tasty, relatively inexpensive and the cheese comes in big backyard barbecue style cubes.
Here, you won’t find an extensive, specialised drinks list. Instead, you’ll order from an adequate menu of tipples and, very likely, wonder why you ever bothered to go to those other confusing places with cocktails you can’t pronounce.
Defiantly cool and affectedly unpretentious, Meyers Place is all a Melbourne should be; a place that makes us all feel effortlessly hip.

Truly a Melbourne icon! One of the originals from the early 90???s ??? that has stood the test of time. Generally attracts an eclectic crowd who all share the same employer (Vic public service). Atmosphere is generally consistent and genuine ??? though tap beer quality has suffered in recent years. Great place for a quiet drink on your own ... but watch out for the sea monkeys in your draft beer!
