It’s an icon, it’s sacred ground, it’s… the MCG!

Editorial

When it comes to sport and Melbourne, there's no going past the fact that the Melbourne Cricket Ground, otherwise known as the MCG, or just 'The G', is a Very Important Place.

Built in 1853 for the Melbourne Cricket Club, it is still the home for the MCC and in the summer months international cricket tests and matches are played there. But in the winter months, it's home to Aussie Rules football, with AFL games played there almost every week, and of course, the Grand Final in September. It's even hosted the 1992 World Cup soccer final, the 1956 Olympic Games, the 2006 Commonwealth Games, rugby league and rugby union matches, live concerts, and even a mass held by Pope John Paul II in 1986. Proof indeed that this is sacred ground for all sorts of believers.

The stadium was redeveloped in 2002 for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and saw the northern stand completely rebuilt. The stadium can now hold a crowd of 100,000. The MCG also houses the National Sports Museum, incorporating the Olympic Museum, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, Australian Cricket Hall of Fame and the Melbourne Cricket Club Museum and is filled with priceless pieces of Australian sports memorabilia.

Tours of the grounds and the Museum are also available, and with ample public transport access, and close proximity to the CBD, the MCG remains part of Melbourne, it's history and its character.

Description

An essential experience for any sports fan, let alone a football nut. Known as the super stage of Aussie sport, the MCG holds more memories than a thousand sets of grand parents, and this hour-long tour captures most of them. And what visit to the MCG is complete without a visit to the National Sports Museum, home to the AFL Hall of Fame? ‘Australia’s Game’ traces the history of AFL footy and even includes the hand-written notes outlining the rules of the game by the founders of Australian football, Wills, Hammersley, Smith & Thompson in 1859; and an awesome new theatrical experience titled ‘James Hird -Off the Bench’ that brings a 3D James Hird to life!
