Vernon Chalker, wicked genius behind the Gin Palace, has the skill to build an atmosphere. Perhaps more importantly, he can lay the creative foundation of a particular mood. Who would have thought that the style of Country Club with a Bordello was a meeting young Melburnians needed?
No one. But this odd fusion works marvellously.
Habitués of the Gin Palace might be shocked to find the lights a little brighter and the crowd a little young here. However, the absolute commitment to an ambience, albeit a little altered, prevails.
The dedicated Hamptons decadence is not only found in the décor. A mood is upheld by the gleaming Miss Pearls, AKA “manageress” Paula Scholes. A loving, impeccably dressed hostess with the grace of a high-end Madam, Pearls sees to it that her “Boys and Girls”, AKA the staff, are behaving and that you, the patron, succumb to her naughty Long Island dreaming.
The New Dandy can enjoy the very best the drinks cabinet of a far more gracious past has to offer. Of course, Pimm's Number One Cup is a house specialty. One may order a round of sandwiches and take them in a garden, said to be reminiscent of Miss Peggy Guggenheim's Venetian hideaway.
It's this devotion to an eccentric theme that elevates this Madame to Melbourne bar royalty.

In a word: FUN! Unsuspecting passers-by would never guess what's upstairs at Madame Brussels. Gotta love all the staff dressed like they're going to the tennis, retro-style. Try the Rose Petal Punch - its awesome!! Great place to hang out on the balcony when its warm.

Sit back, relax and take in the world from the glorious balcony of Madame Brussels. On a balmy summer evening there?s no finer venue for a catch up and a cold one, but be there by six, or you?ll be waiting for a seat. The punches are delicious (buy them by the jug), and the toasties are pretty good too. The only downside of this otherwise excellent venue is that the service is excruciatingly slow, so you?re better off heading to the bar, than waiting for service to come to you.

Even for a group of just 18 year olds, we had a ball!! WE stood for about an hr out on the terrace as it was full to the max but it was so funky and peculiar, but at the same time it's amazingly lovely

Decor is tacky, seating uncomfortable, food is the quality of a primary school canteen (probably worse), drinks overpriced. And the view . . . what view?! Horrified at the prices for a very substandard "meal". Feel ripped off and disillusioned.
