Locanda Cucina Bar

A little unexpected Italy.

Editorial

On paper, this place looks superb. Locanda is the offspring of the DiMattina family; the entrepreneurs behind Carlton's Il Gambero and the CBD's refurbed, revitalised Society. So, this newer kid could not fail to read like a winner. Happily, Locanda delivers on the promise of the page.

With one qualification. The bar and its attendant restaurant are part of the Rydges Hotel. And, just like nearly every other Hotel bar, this one feels as though it has been annexed by a corporation. In a town that features dozens of effortlessly chic enotecas, this one feels just a little like a franchise.

But, just a little. If you squint and ignore the particular feel imparted by the fact of people eating their Weekend Package, Locanda is almost as stylish as any other top notch Italo-Melbourne bar. The wait staff are hot. The Bruschetta and sundry bar snacks beat most. And the clean lines of the bar design take you straight to the Via Veneto by way of a modular furniture showroom.

Importantly for drinkers, the wine list is top-drawer. Locanda was the first joint in town to use the Enomatic system for dispensing wine. Argon keeps open bottles barrel-fresh and allows for a greater selection by-the-glass.

What a wine-list! Now this place is definitely worth popping into. Personally I think after dinner it's worth moving from where you are eating to enjoy a quiet drink here. For the wine-lover it is a must.
