Don’t forget your dancing sneakers, and lap up the lasers, Khokolat is good for an intimate boogie, killer cocktails and groov-e-delic lounging.

Editorial

You know how some places can be so uncool that you they're actually cool? Well that's Khokolat, a funky, retro-themed, low-ceilinged basement dance space just off Hardware lane in the city.

The décor is a step back into the future with a retro 70's palette of brown and orange, soft comfy furnishings including white leather sofas that makes for a groovy (do we still use that word?) and funky lounging vibe. Clientele is a nice mixed pastiche of the smart uni crowd; early to mid-20s with a smattering of early 30s funksters, but overall they're a well-dressed, stylish lot. These are mainly Gen-Ys with inner-city style.

The bar serves up the usual club-style drinks with basic beers, spirits and wines, with a few cocktails thrown in for good measure.

But don't come if you don't like dance music because this what Khokolat is all about. The soundtrack is all about classic booty-shakin' funk with upbeat positive happy house. On Friday nights it's all about the Dirty Traffic with funky, discotechy, eclectic house and rotating special guest DJs. But don't come if you don't like rnb music because this what Khokolat is all about. Playing funk-ass new and old skool RNB and hip hop beats every Friday and Saturday night.
