The Canary spawns a fledgling

Editorial

Ever since puss was a kitten and still powerless to break the neck of little birds, Melbourne’s Hairy Canary has been providing an answer to the question, “Where’s a decent place for a drink?” The Canary has long been a passably hip cage to the city’s pretty young and not so young things. Dependable service, decent drinks and a trilling vibration show no signs of ebbing.

So, the Canaries did what any responsible bird might; they annexed the aviary.

Hairy Little Sista is, like its hirsute older sibling, no last-gasp hip-for-five-minutes Melbourne bar. It’s a reliable drinking hole built to last.

Expect the same snacks you’ll find at the original Hairy and expect them to be delivered with reasonable speed. And this is despite the fact some of them are ferried from the more grown up bird a few doors down.

HLS provides a near perfect venue for after-work noshing and drinking. Neither bogan nor BoHo, it caters to a broad range of tastes in its décor and general ambience. Small plates maintain the blood sugar and zesty little cups of sangria do their bit to ease conversation.

This fledgling sings of all that is good in basic Melbourne bar culture.

I went to this little bar/restaurant after hearing good reviews of it's sister sites. Not so good here. Whilst table service for drinks might seem attractive, I have waited less for entree's to be bought to my table than in the half empty bar. And when the drinks did arrive for me and my friends only one was what had actually been ordered. In a fairly quiet bar, 3 times is quite an achievement to get an order right. So if you don't mind waiting, or the surprise of whatever you may get in place of what you ordered this may be the place for you. Otherwise, big sister needn't fear the competition.
