FAD Gallery & Bar
Editorial
There are people who need to belong to a club that only lets people like them in. There are people who are desperate to belong to a club that would never let them join. And there are those who want to belong to a place that isn’t a club and doesn’t do door policies. The Fad Gallery is such a utopian watering hole.
Local artists hang their work here and drink. Art students come here and talk about art and drink. People who can never drink in a bar that could be described as slick, chic or modern come here and drink, and people who don’t wear matching socks come here and drink. It’s a little bit of boho right in the middle of Chinatown.
Of course the fit out is arty bar 101. It’s eclectic to say the least. Op shop couches, retro lamps, and such an assortment of chairs, armchairs, and tables, I think it’s fair to say Fad Gallery may actually encompass all furniture styles of the 20th century. This suits the clientele well, who can be just as varied as the furnishings.
As well as the plethora of art there is also smorgasbord of events. One night you may come here for an exhibition opening, the next you might find yourself attending a talk by human rights lawyer Julian Burnside and the night after it may be an evening of dub or rock or jazz.
The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff and friendly and chatty, which is something of an anomaly for a CBD bar.
