Big marks to go with the big lagers and big, big Chicken Parmi.

Editorial

Our eating and drinking history has fused the casual lure of the Anglo-Irish pub to the more “bohemian” feel of France by way of Italy to bring us something uniquely Melbourne. The owners of the Bier Café have successfully modified Melbourne's quirks for a broad audience. And, they've done it at a very reasonable price point. Meals in particular here are hailed by city workers for their quality and value.

Imported beer, of course, rarely comes cheap. But, the ale aficionado will suspend these concerns when treated to a list that includes 14 draught and 50 bottled beers. This is by no means the city's most extensive beer menu. However, it's the only one that comes with a reliably tasty $14 lunch menu.

Various function spaces are available for hire in this three-storey establishment. We have no reports of the café's efficiency as an event organiser but, given the competence and good cheer of staff, we imagine they might score top marks.

An extensive continental beer menu, dark wood panelling and a foreign-esque sounding name are intended to transport the drinker to Europe. In fact, all these components serve to remind you chiefly of Melbourne and the European hospitality traditions on which its successful bars are built.
