Cumulus Inc. is a beautiful open-plan restaurant with my personal favourite - a kitchen you can spy into (saving the poor staff from too much head chef swearing). The place looks onto fashionable Flinders Lane through the perfect vantage point of wall-to-wall-to-ceiling windows. You can enjoy everything from a four-course gourmet meal or just perch at the big marble bar and order from a stunning wine list, along with a cheese and meat platter.

The staff are extremely attentive and listen to what you want before making considered recommendations. They make sure they take care of you from the moment you sit down to the minute you get up to leave, all without getting too in your face - a rare skill to find these days.

While the decor is certainly upmarket, with no expense spared on the materials, somehow it avoids the heartless sterility of some oh-so-snooty venues. The place has heaps of character and a chattering, clattering crowd. We didn't feel underdressed in our summer's eve shorts.

It's not a cheap eat or drink here, but one that's well worth the extra expense for a little slice of luxury without the attitude. The staff are welcoming and friendly, the surrounds are luxurious without being off-putting, and the wine list is impressive. Grab a stool at the bar and enjoy. Just remember that the place is only licensed till 11pm, so don't get too comfy, as you'll be out well before the witching hour.
