Cricketers Bar

Our sporting history in leather and willow is written all over these walls

Editorial

Back in the days before tabloid controversy claimed all sport, this cosy bar was the meeting place for cricketing Test teams to gather post match. Now that our heroes of the pitch risk more danger than a wicket keeper when in public, all that remains of the Australian greats is memorabilia.

But, it is such wonderful memorabilia.

If you, or your dad, are the type to get a giddy thrill from Bradman's bat or Trumper's signature, then there is simply no other place to imbibe. And, even if the idea of a 99.9 batting average leaves you cold, this is a lovely bar nonetheless.

Unlike so many contemporary “themed” bars, this old gentleman does not reek of kitsch. Here, a lovingly curated collection evokes quiet passion; not shrill infatuation. The Cricketer's is exactly the sort of place you'd hope to find at the centre of a stately and much loved city hotel. The service is impeccable, the ambience is gentle and, given that this is an Australian hotel bar, the beer is beautifully poured. Oh; and the snacks aren't bad, either.

The Cricketer's may not scream “romance” like some of its neighbours in the CBD's tonier end. It's much more a fiftieth date venue than a choice for a first date. This is not to say, however, it is without seductive charm. A quiet tipple here will have you gazing at Old Melbourne, just as you gaze at your old partner, with new fondness.

The Cricketers is a standard boozer but with a little class, borrowed from the Windsor. Good for a beer when you are still suited up or with the ladies.
