Colonial Hotel

A good meal and a cold pint keep punters happy mid-week, until the weekend when their ties end up as bandanas and karaoke reigns supreme.

Editorial

Careful where you tread, soldier. This hotel has two parts. Although, the sub-woofers pumping psy-trance and early Detroit techno should tip you off: the club Brown Alley ain't a pub.

The Colonial's bar, however, is certainly a pub. It's a fairly shiny pub and looks as though it borrowed some brushed-metal cues from IKEA. But, it's still a pub. And, on a weeknight, it's a pub full of folks striving to forget how they spent their ofice day.

And, they do manage to forget. You can feel the memories of spreadsheets ebbing away as the noise encroaches. This is not a quiet little joint. It's the contemporary version of a worker's pub. Instead of tradesmen and shop-girls, however, we find escapees from the cubicle farm.

The place, rather like the job market itself, has a transient feel. It's a nice enough place; but it doesn't feel much like a local. You've got a better chance of Everybody Knowing Your Name on Facebook.

Low cost decent food and a range of events spaces make this a popular choice for office parties. There can be few better spots in the CBD to snog Margaret from Accounts than among the Big Sports Screens and Jim-and-Coke at the Colonial.
