A small wonder tucked away down a bin alley next to Town Hall, Cabinet Bar is a beauty to behold.

It's a small wonder that the Cabinet Bar and Balcony escaped my keen hot spot search for so long. It follows the tried and tested Melbourne laneway sensibilities, tucked away down a bin lane right next to Town Hall. Said balcony even overlooks Swanston. Yet somehow I missed it, and I suspect this may be part of its magic.

This beautiful haven from the madness is certainly small, but perfectly formed. It's almost TARDIS-like in its ability to cram in multiple Parisian-style tables for two, as well as two sofas and a large wooden shared table. Extra chairs are cunningly hung from coat hooks on the wall.

The ambience is candlelit and cosy, with a real old world charm featuring patterned wallpaper and dark wood furniture. Tuesday nights are great for those on a budget with happy hour all day. While there, the tap Boags ran out, so I was upgraded to a nice Italian bottled beer. And then when my delicious prawn, chilli and refried bean quesadilla took a little longer than expected, another bottle was provided, gratis. Can't fault the impeccable and friendly staff.

The crowd is young and trendy, the wine and cocktail list impressive, and Wednesday's $10 flatbreads are extremely appealing. So do your self a favour, climb up and away from the hoi polloi and settle in for the evening with a cheese a quince platter.
