Who said size doesn’t matter? At Billboard Nightclub, bigger is better.

Editorial

Taking up a fair bit of space on the corner of Russell Street and Little Bourke, Billboard Nightclub has shouldered its fair share of the Melbourne music scene. Many a sweat-soaked brow has nodded to names like Carl Cox, Todd Terry, Cut Copy, Presets, Santogold, The Streets and Hot Chip. But it's not all about the bleeps and beats with Okkervil River, My Morning Jacket and the Breeders pulling out stellar sets in recent times.

Setting up shop a hefty forty years ago, this venue has opened the doors to Tina Turner, Little River Band and AC/DC, and recently played host to a swag of hardcore bands celebrating metal month. The sound is large, lighting is neon and glitzy, and the dance floor is built to impress.

Split over a few different levels, there's plenty of room to take a back seat when the pace of the dance floor gets a bit much. Fitted out with generous black leather couches, Jane's Bar can be closed off from the main drag entirely. Straddling one corner of the space, a tiled bar leads the way into a VIP lounge that offers a prime view minus the volume.

And with a capacity of roundabout 900, a little breathing space is welcome.

When I think of Billboards I can help but go back to uni days of ol... dodgy! But as a music venue it really does work. Layout is perfect for electronic gigs and artists.
