Bennetts Lane Jazz Club
Editorial
Bennetts Lane offers two main rooms, the original and more intimate Jazz Club is at the front and plays host to the regular weekly gigs, while the Jazz Lab next door is for larger gigs and weekend crowds. The focus of Bennetts Lane is pure jazz, and its down to earth approach has proven very popular with the urban art and architecture set, as well as out-of-towners coming for the high quality live jazz.
The décor is styled and simple, as this venue makes no apologies for being all about the music. While no longer the smoke-filled nightspot of old (picture a film like Bar Fly rather than Casablanca), Bennetts Lane offers a selection of spirits and a wine list with some decent variation, as well as bar snacks including cheese platters, focaccias, and cakes - simple is best when it comes to appreciating the many international acts to come through. While you can't reserve a table, you can book tickets by phone and online, but you should plan to get there early - especially for bigger shows.
As one of the first secret laneway venues of Melbourne, Bennetts Lane still holds the crown for authentic and live jazz. It's where a quiet scotch and a tinkling piano is all you need to take you away from the troubles of life - at least for a night.
