Baroq House
Editorial
Tucked away in a cobblestone laneway between Melbourne Central and the QV complex, this over-the-top, mansion-style bar and lounge, offers luxurious extravagance over two levels with sumptuous Baroque-style interiors that would even make Marie Antoinette blush. From the moment you walk in, you know you are stepping into a different world.
Roving entertainment of fire performers, magicians and other 'surreal' acts further enhances the otherworldly, almost magical atmosphere. The bar area features black onyx marble, enormous Venetian glass chandeliers, with a luxurious colour palette of rich red, black and gold. The tight, but funky dance space in the basement features large day beds for lounging on after you've overdosed on dance, as well as scattered ottomans, flocked wallpaper and a mosaic tiled dance floor.
This is high-end clubbing, so dress to impress, and if you find it hard to get in, go to the website and sign up for the guest list, or become a member: they promise 'royal treatment' for an affordable price.
The food is minimal, yet sumptuous and surprisingly affordable, with a great selection of fine cheeses to go with the first class wine list. This is high-end drinking - a French champagne-lover's paradise. There's also a whisky bar at ground level with a selection of over 100 whisky varieties from across the globe. And down in the basement, it's all about the Belvedere vodka.

We thought this place would be a bit over the top and full of 'the beautiful young people' but arriving here on a Saturday night was a lovely experience from the door staff to the space, decor and music. The ladies have GHD's too - always handy!

was really disappointed as we got a guestlist, had a 2:1 ratio of girls to guys and they still knocked us back at 9.30pm saying they were too busy. We were all dressed to impress so i couldnt possibly see an issue.

In my experience it was good except for the crowd!

This place sucks. Was on a guest list, travelled two hours to be there for a friends birthday, only to be refused entry. I was in shirt and dress shoes. The only explaination I got was that "I can't help you". As I walk off, 30 girls are allowed entry. The treating of patrons is appauling

Dan, your experience has Melbourne written all over it. Sexist (and racist) bouncers are ruining the nightlife! I've writting to the Lord Mayor about this very issue!

Have to say I've had similar experiences to Dan. Can't say I'm a fan of any of it's staff. I'd definitely steer well clear. A protentious vibe when there is nothing to possibly be protentious about.

Was there for a birthday last night. The bouncer was so condescending to one person in our group. Told him to fix his collar and that we 'aren't in the 70s anymore'. I get that they want to be selective about who they let in (which btw is utter crap) but there is no need to be so nasty. You're not that powerful or fantastic. You're a bouncer at a nightclub. I think it's sad if you need to make others feel like crap to make yourself feel better. Once you are in though, the club is a really nice place. Very classy and great decor.

I can't agree more to dan's comment. Were in a good mix of a group, everyone was dressed up. Had a guestlist reservation for a birthday Sat night for 9:30pm, got there at 9:15pm only to be refused entry. All he said was 'I can't help you tonight'. When we asked the bouncer why his reply was 'I don't have to give you a reason by law'. Easily the worst bouncers, racist and highly impolite. Stat away from this place. Spice Market is better!

Baroq House is an amazing venue with top of the range drinks and an amazing atmosphere. The exact reason why people want to go there is not only the great music but the goodlooking crowd. If they let every tom dick and harry in, no one would wanna go there, they would go to their local pub true? Dress to impress and you will enjoy your night.

Apparently if you make a booking online they don't guarantee entry. Went for a friends birthday, two girls and a guy, only be to be knocked back at 9.00 saying they were "too busy". What a joke. The bouncers are pricks who enjoy the powertrip. They were rude and condecending. I've never experienced such poor service before. Ease up tiger, at the end of the day you're just a door bitch. Won't go here ever again, not worth my money! Ps. Also saw them knock a guy back cuz they didn't like the 'colour if his jeans'

Organising a hens party Baroq staff lovely on the phone practically begging business.Despite reserving booking wks in advance, being on the door list,3telephone conversations/email exchanges organising booking,on the night we were refused entry,no explanation other than the fact that an $800deposit is apparently required(was not told this in any of the prior correspondence&suspect it's B/S)Can only assume despite being well dressed we didn't 'look the part'(seemed size 6 18yo's not on the door list had no issue getting in-BTW we were not drunk&are not unattractive girls!)Space can’t have been an issue-despite being assured there would be music for all tastes played over 3levels,only1 level was open.Talks w/manager&door staff to no avail,SO SO rude.Very embarrassed to have to change plans at the last minute.Blatantly discriminative, which I remind you is ILLEGAL.Luckly found a bar up the road&between the 15of us would have spent upwards of $3,000.Your loss Baroq.DO NOT PLAN A NIGHT HERE!

Very poor. Extremely rude time-wasting staff. I made bookings on two occasions with friends. Yet both times, despite being the bookings being accepted we were refused entry for no discernible reason. We were all very well dressed. I gave them the benefit of the doubt on the first occasion. But, fool me twice... As other reviewers here have experienced, the staff are extremely rude time-wasters, and I will never come back. I organise large social gatherings at bars and clubs, and initially thought this could be a great venue to bring the crowd. I will be giving this club a poor review whenever asked for recommendations, and putting it on the list of "Bad Bars". Avoid.

The security here are a bunch of apes. Honestly they are the reason why Melb nightclub scene is so sad. Middle aged steroid losers who just get off on knocking back ordinary people (With money to spend) looking for a good night. Uniquely Melbourne.
