Bambu Bar and Lounge
Editorial
For the sake of argument, let’s say that Melbourne has two types of city bars. There are the places you go to get smashed and the places you go to get tipsy. If you’re over 19 and/or you esteem the function of your liver, you’re probably drawn toward the second kind of bar.
Bambu is the sort of place that seems to encourage moderate drinking. There’s a feeling of ease here and not a hint of that compulsion that makes you want to drop the Jaeger bomb.
This lack of hard drinking urgency is probably fostered, in part, by some very relaxing sofas. They make you feel as though you’re in the lounge room of a new and pleasant acquaintance. You’re comfortable, but not quite so comfortable that you’d drink everything in the fridge and let one rip while wearing your tracky dacks.
In fact, what you might do is enjoy a brief and civil conversation with one of the experienced bartenders about what kind of wine or cocktail you fancy. They give good advice and good mixology in equal pours.
A few years back, Bambu was hot. Hot, hot. Now it has cooled just a tad and this is for the better. As a result, the crowd is more various and the bar staff certainly rely more on their skill and charm than their hot, hot, hot reputation. These days, Bambu provides a pleasant way to start an evening or end a day at work.
