24 Moons
Editorial
The primary impact upon entry to this bar is style; a statement that might be less impressive in a city full of bars that ooze chic. Melbourne drinkers are, more or less, inured to marvellous interiors. Yet, despite an over-supply of architectural splendour, 24 Moons still hovers a notch above.
Viewed on paper, this place simply shouldn't work. The illegal drinking joints of prohibition era USA are fused with almost hippy materials and delivered to us by way of a Weimar Republic cabaret. These design elements are figured into a minimalist, faintly Kubrick mid-century futurist style. And, to add the potential for further confusion, the entertainment here, when it is not slinky electronica, comes in the form of burlesque. What could become aesthetic chaos instead gels to give many a good reason to hobble down the cobblestones of ACDC lane and drink in the atmosphere, and high-end cocktails, provided by a real oasis.
An unfussy but tempting menu feeds the needs of discerning Melburnians with fine cheese and cured meat. The House sangria has become a local nano-legend and the bar staff have a post-doctoral air when set to any cocktail challenge. At once comfortably dark and pleasantly airy, 24 Moons has quickly cycled into the orbit of discerning drinkers.
