It's a testament to 1000 Pound Bend's originally and sheer, unadulterated kook factor that when I first inadvertently stumbled across it, while hopelessly lost and heading the wrong way down Little Lonsdale horrifically late for a friend's party, I decided to plonk myself down for a relaxing coffee.
A quick chat with one of the oh-so-cool barmen revealed not only the actual location of my mate's party, but the reasoning behind this awesome little venue. Leaping forth from the ashes of St Jerome's, 1000 Pound Bend is a much airier but still determinedly shabby chic and cosy space from the same folks. It's all battered old sofas, odds and ends of random bric a brac for furniture and even a few re-housed paintings from that sadly departed laneway haven.
The huge exhibition gallery out the back is one of the largest independent spaces in Melbourne, and there's always plenty to peruse, enhancing the air of genuinely cool originality that pervades this place. There's also a rather cool cinema space upstairs.
Both the coffee and the food is remarkably cheap, and as such the crowd tends to attract the penniless student and artist brigade, more than the city slicker, which can only be a good thing in my book. Unfortunately, however, they're only licensed for catered functions. All the more reason to book a party here!

Love this place. Bar that feels like my lounge room and a gallery out the back - best of everything.

Don't host an event here, ever. Double bookings are the flavour of the month and the staff are rude and inconsiderate.
