The Sanctuary was formed in 1920 and is now part-public zoo, animal hospital, endangered species breeding centre and educational resource. The zoo’s rural, native bush clad aspect on the edge of the Yarra Ranges creates a unique environment. The Sanctuary also hosts special events and school holiday programs for children.
