Formerly called the Geebung Polo Club, and before that the Sydney Liars Club, this old pub has returned to its former name of the Doutta Gall – by which it was known way back in 1888. What the words ‘Doutta Gall’ actually mean is lost in the mists of time. Some say it’s a European corruption of an original Aboriginal name for the Flemington area, meaning ‘treeless plain’, but the jury is still out on that one.
But the jury is definitely ‘in’ on the high quality of the Doutta Gall – a pub synonymous with a friendly vibe that brings in Gen-Y party people and a favourite haunt during the spring racing carnival. It’s rare to find a pub with no ‘clique’ in inner Melbourne, but I think the Doutta almost pulls it off – except for maybe on Saturday nights, which can at times be a bit ‘nightclubby’.
Décor is cosy and rarefied with Chesterfield couches and armchairs, further cosy-fied by red carpets, heavy velvet drapes, and rich dark chocolate hues. Separate rooms make the Doutta a great place for private functions and parties, but also for intimate dinners.
At the Doutta you’ll find all the usual favourites on tap, and a robust wine list of Australian and New Zealand reds and whites. Nothing not to like here.
The food is pretty standard pub fare – nothing too challenging here for the average punter’s palate. I’d dig into the Prosciutto wrapped Chicken Breast served with mash potato and silver beet.

What an Awesome Pub! Came across it last weekend for a friends birthday and was blown away by the place. At first I thought I was going to a local pub, but ended up walking into a packed dance floor and had a sensational time. I'll be back for sure.
