If you’re seeking the quintessential Fitzroy experience, look no further than The Standard Hotel.

Editorial

While the formerly bohemian Brunswick Street has sadly gone the way of Chapel Street in recent years, you don't have to wander too far off the beaten track to find the perfect Fitzroy experience behind the unassuming doors of The Standard Hotel.

Located just one block from the Brunswick Street tram line, and a short walk from Nicholson Street, The Standard boasts the largest and leafiest beer garden in Fitzroy, and has been welcoming locals since 1865.

The wood-panelled interior is liberally decorated with old photographs and original artworks, band posters and postcards, plastic parrots, Elvis portraits and a well-dressed owl. The distinctive décor - reminiscent of an eccentric antique shop - adds to the pub's charm; which is further enhanced by one of the best wine lists in town. French, German, Italian and even Austrian wines are featured, not to mention a sizeable Australian selection; although only a dozen vintages are available by the glass. Beer drinkers are well provided for, with eight beers on tap (including Carlton Draught, Guinness and Asahi). The selection of spirits is simple but solid, save for a wide range of whiskeys; perfect for those colder nights.

The kitchen is open seven days a week, and offers everything from pub grub standards through to more exotic fare. Specials change fortnightly, save for seasonal dishes, and vegetarians are well catered for.

Free entertainment is provided by bands on Wednesdays and Sundays - expect a gentle rock, folk or alt-country vibe - with trivia soon to recommence on Tuesdays.

Unlike some Fitzroy bars, where the staff barely condescend to notice you, being more interested in their next acting gig or their modelling career, the staff at The Standard are friendly and efficient; a welcome part of the pub's distinctive charm.
