The Panama Dining Room

Panama ticks all the right boxes and throws in one of the best vistas in Melbourne to boot.

Editorial

Much is made of the two flights of stairs trek up to Panama. True, it's a small hike, but oh, what pleasures await you. On entering Panama you will smile. The sheer size of the place inspires you to take a deep breath and just take it all in for a second. The maitre d' seems to understand this, and obligingly gives you a second to collect yourself before pointing you in the direction of the bar.

Then they hit you - those magnificent arched windows, I mean. Either grab a window-side high table or a bench seat and marvel at the scene below. The front windows provide quite the layered vista. First you'll see gritty realism of Smith Street and all the usual suspects. Then further out the more genteel suburbs come into view, finishing off with the Dandenongs. It's quite the eclectic landscape. If simpler visions are for you, take up beside the side-street window which perfectly frames the beautifully illuminated pathway trees. City skyline views are available for those seated nearer to the dining room.

Panama's decor is retro done well. From the geometric wallpaper to the 70's brick bar, it oozes style. Club couches and booth seating are great for larger groups, as are the communal tables.

The free pool table is as fetching as ever, even though it gets a mighty work-out, and the Sunday ping pong tournament is just another of Panama's joys.

Booze-wise, these people know what they are doing. The wine list is well balanced and original and beer range is more than impressive.

An all-round winner.

We loved Panama from the moment we climbed up the flights of steps and pushed through into the top level. The large arched windows and thoughtfully placed lighting really made the atmosphere. The food was enjoyed by all, although the pricing is certainly more then stated - mains are around $30. Vegetarian choice was ok - 3 entrees and 1 main. Will definitely be going back

Magnificent place. I had my 35th here and it was the perfect night. Would highly recommend.
