The Fitz Cafe

For Fitzroy locals, Sundays just wouldn't be complete without brunch at this Brunswick Street icon, though lunch and dinner are equally well catered for.

Editorial

On a sunny day you can sit outside under luscious plane trees at The Fitz's green metal tables and chairs. They may have seen better days but they suit the atmosphere perfectly. For Melbourne's more temperamental days, dine indoors in the no fuss dining area at either the cushion spattered banquet or the bistro-style wooden tables and chairs, though phone ahead as rainy weekends are especially busy.

Open from 7am seven days a week, breakfast is served till 4pm and perfect for the late riser. Opt for the Fitz breakfast of poached eggs, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato and hollandaise served on sourdough toast, washed down with a glass of freshly squeezed OJ. Snack on the Fitz burger, a lean ground beef burger patty with fresh herbs, grilled onion, tomato, egg, cheese and lettuce in a sesame bun served with fries, or come in as the lights dim and Brunswick Street really comes to life. Choose a main of corn-fed chicken roasted in a secret herb blend and served on roast pumpkin, green beans, rocket and couscous, finished with a drizzling of fig molasses, or opt for something from the specials board. Spirits, liqueurs and bottled beers are all on offer, as is a small wine list of mostly Australian varieties, or BYO.
