The Alchemist
Editorial
There's plenty of competition for The Alchemist, but as the new kid on the block, the bar has quickly developed a reputation for elegant imaginative cocktails, great service, funky overstuffed-chairs and red velvet décor with a mystical vibe. It has a touch of the private gentleman's club with a heavy sprinkling of the bordello to it. Apparently the owners collected the furniture for years, and the attention to detail is fascinating, with old pharmacy cabinets, tiny little love seats, marble-topped tables, little drawers everywhere, decadent chandeliers, satin sofas and funky faux rococo antiques - kind of like Franco Cozzo, but funkier.
The space is organised into separate little pods of chairs and tables, so perfect for a cosy space for two, but it even works with a larger group. The clientele is an eclectic Brunswick street mix, and yet the separate tribes seem to coexist in relaxed harmony - the background music is unobtrusive, making for a place where you can actually engage in stimulating conversation without having to shout.
There's a satisfying list of beers and Australian wines, but The Alchemist specialises in signature (decadently-priced but worth it) cocktails. I started off with a classic champagne cocktail aperitif with cognac, followed by a new treat, the Tuscan Mule which was white rum, freshly crushed orange, heaps of ice topped off by a hit of Bundaberg Ginger Beer. I inhaled it way too fast and went back for another. There are also a variety of flaming cocktails for those who like their cocktails on fire. One thing was missing though; a regular cocktail happy hour might bring in more punters during the week.
The menu comes in the form of a medieval scroll, and food is mainly small, yet satisfying portions of tapas, meant to accompany your drink. I had the skewered chicken with sate sauce, followed by probably the best nachos pig-out this side of Johnston Street; they were so nice we actually ordered a second round.
Magical Wednesdays include an actual real-live resident magician Anthony De Masi and his assistant rabbit. Thursdays are live jazz, and Saturday afternoons feature swing, so bring you dancing shoes.

The Alchemist is a cocktail and tapas bar in the heart of vibrant Brunswick St. It has positioned itself as a destination that offers a point of difference amongst the beer halls of Brunswick St. The Edwardian era furniture and menu of tasty tapas and creative modern cocktails certainly standout for the venue. Brunswick St parking is a bit of a hassel so do yourself a favour and catch a tram.
