Shire Cafe

The Shire café is Fitroy's “off the beaten track” restaurant café. Situated on the ground floor of the funky, award winning Abito building, the shire offers a relaxed and intimate café atmosphere. The Shire has been created to provide a special place for people to eat, drink, work, celebrate, plan, chill and relax.

Editorial

Nestled comfortably at the base of a backstreet apartment building, Shire offers cafe- style food with an Italian slant and a smart edge that reflects the '60s-inspired decor. A bluestone fireplace, blonde wood walls and box stools give a minimalistic feel, while the stag's head, colourful artwork and the old bowling lane that makes up part of the floor add some homelier, if not quirky, touches. An old Victorian dresser is crowded with preserves, while fresh muffins, panini and salads are in mouth-watering array at the front counter.

Breakfast options feature highly on the menu, with plenty of the regular egg combos as well as house-made bircher muesli, sweetcorn fritters with roast tomato, bacon and avocados and a breakfast ciabatta with avocado, bacon, alfalfa, cottage cheese and Tabasco. The lunch and dinner menu offers a selection of wraps, pasta and burgers that are nothing surprising but certainly satisfy a craving for something substantial, appetising and wholesome. There's a small but serviceable wine list that is perfectly adequate for this cafe-style food. Warm chocolate brownies, lemon tart, stick date pudding and apple and rhubarb crumble round out a familiar yet comforting menu.

This place has had its ups and downs, new owners, but still has an awesome warm fire in the winter. Living in the local area saw me and my partner frequenting often when it first opened. unfortunatly quality and love seems to have gone from the cooking and service, hence we have stopped going. Wish it wasn't so because it was the only place you could go and get served on a busy sunday or saturday in fitzroy. pick up your feet, there dragging a tad. :)
