Shingles

Clandestine hangout for those who want to relive the days of Fitzroy past.

Editorial

Once you get past the name and its connotations, you are in for a few surprises. Firstly, there's the secret entrance. Up the stairs and to the right there is a bookcase, and yes, it doubles as a door to this enigmatic bar. This ploy alone lets you know you are part of a clandestine affair. Shingles is what old-school Fitzroy locals have been waiting for - for years. It's a return to the time when Fitzroy was home to Melbourne's bohemia.

Well-weathered couches and heavy curtains give the lounge area a feel that could be almost described as boarding-house chic. Whereas the bar area, with its dark walls and quirky op shop pictures, has a definite members' club atmosphere. If you simply must drink in an architecturally designed cavern, than Shingles is not for you - and that's the point. This bar is for those who shun the new Fitzroy and its unstoppable gentrification. This bar is for those who believe they are the real Fitzroy deal.

Shingles is about simplicity, and that covers the beverages too. Beer on tap and standard drinks are on offer; you won't find a Lychee Martini here! Music is suitably indie-rock or alt-country, and if you're hungry the pub downstairs makes for a very handy dinner solution.
