Retro Cafe
Editorial
The colourfully kitsch decor sets the mood when you step into Retro. Stacked with '50s touches such as laminex tables and chairs, couches and lampshades, it's a favourite local hangout and a cheery place to stop in at any time of the day. Cure a hangover with the famous all-day “big brekkie” teamed with a do-it-yourself bloody Mary, catch up over coffee and cake, served with a smile from the open kitchen, or host a function in the versatile space upstairs.
Main course items such as char-grilled kangaroo with roasted parsnip and carrot, sage and blackberry jus or the signature spicy sausages with creamy potato mash, beetroot chutney, bacon and red wine jus are generously sized but can be pricey. However, there are numerous “small plate” choices and plenty of special offers which can make eating here a bargain. Every day between 3pm and 6pm is happy hour with $3 drinks and $8 pizzas - try the “smokin' on the Retro” with char grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, spring onion and smoky barbecue sauce. There's also a set two- or three-course menu available which makes dining here better value. Team this with excellent coffee, friendly staff, a great open fire and plentiful outdoor seating in the dappled sunlight and you have an ideal regular local.

This bright yellow Brunnie Street icon is an excellent meeting place, easy to spot for those out-of-town family members who might be turning off Alexandra Parade. The relaxed vibe and progressive menu makes it an easy introduction to the Brunswick Street buzz.
