Provincial Hotel

With echoes of that cool European bar you left behind in your youth, the Provincial adds yet another layer of cool to Fitzroy.

Editorial

The Provincial might look a bit shabby from the outside, but don't let that deter you. Once inside you'll find a charming mix of rough, paint flaked walls, antique lamps, framed poster prints from the ??20s and some prized chesterfields. While the place looks quite cavernous from street, it's far more intimate than you might expect. There are pockets of seating scattered around the front bar, but the focus tends to be on the long bar and casual mingling. Arrive on Friday or Saturday evening and be prepared for a lot of standing around. There's a small cluster of tables outside, but they fill up just as quickly (if not more so). Indeed, the outside tables are wonderful for a spot of people watching.

While beers at the Provincial are your standard pub fair, the wine list is actually pretty good. This comes down to the hotel's adjoining dining area, which won a casual dining award in 2007, and one of the flow on affects can be found in the public bar's drinks.

That said, the Provincial is a laidback venue; one that's happy to accommodate local eccentrics, professionals and tourists. It's cosy in the winter and opens up to bustling Brunswick street when summer kicks in. Either way, you'll find a friendly, slightly older crowd milling around.
