One Twenty Bar

A piece of the recent past in modern Fitzroy.

Editorial

Situated near what is possibly the hippest street corner in Melbourne is a slice of old Fitzroy that you could be forgiven for thinking remains unchanged since the '80s. Whether this is a good thing or not is up you to determine; however, if you like your dance music classic retro '70s, '80s and top 40, the One Twenty Bar will retrospect you back in time to yesteryear.

While the rest of Fitzroy is struggling to breathe under an indie-emo crush, one hole in the wall near the corner of Johnston and Brunswick Streets remains unashamedly old-school. Live bands play every Friday night while a DJ operates the turntables on Saturday nights. In keeping with the step-back-in-time flavour of the joint, a cocktail list boasts the Harvey Wallbanger as a staple. Now, if that is a foreign construct to you, our dear young reader, allow yourself some enlightenment: Vodka and Galliano is mixed with orange juice over ice to form a potent and sickly brew that gets you where you want to be in a real hurry. Much like the music you'll be listening too!

Colonial furnishings, warm soft lighting and an unpretentious manner make this 'classic' Fitzroy nightclub appeal to those who did it the first time and are up for round two (or three), and those to whom the trends of the '70s and '80s are curios best saved for fancy dress outings and novelty parties.
