Labour in Vain
Editorial
Built back in 1844 when Fitzroy was considered the bush, there is still a genuine Fitzroy feeling in this small pub in the middle of Brunswick Street but without the hipsters. There's definitely more a locals vibe but with that comes a genuine friendliness. People sit around playing cards, shooting the breeze and when the boys from Jet are in town, it's their favourite hang out.
It's one large room, which is part of the absolute charm of the place. Bottles sit on shelves, bric and brack, old-fashioned wooden tables, a great collection of memorabilia advertising signs for current and defunct brews and a pool table for pool sharks. Smokers can pop up to the roof for a fag or outside to the beer garden. They do great self-serve BBQ's in up top in the summer months also!
Make sure you try a pint of Labor In Vain's specialty - Fitzroy Amber Ale, which is brewed specifically for the pub. You can also find a good old-fashioned stout or porter. There's a simple bar menu and the live music happens on Sunday nights. It's really an intimate venue. Bands set up on the floor and feel like they are part of the audience.
