Gypsy Bar
Editorial
Sometimes bars can appear and disappear in Brunswick Street so fast it can give you whiplash. She’s a demanding minx, this strip, and she can be cruel and unforgiving. So many wide eyed hopefuls who dreamed of starting there hip careers as bar owners in Fitzroy have had those dreams shattered and no-one really knows why…well, we sort of do. Know your demographic people!
While, Gypsy Bar is not the bar she used to be ten or fifteen years ago she has managed to survive. And she has managed to survive because she watched her demographic change and she changed accordingly. While some have stuck to their guns and succeeded others have floundered in a sea of confused identity and drowned as a result. This bar has relied on her laurels as well as catering to the new breed of locals.
Gypsy Bar’s biggest draw card is the window seat. You could spend an entire evening here with someone, sitting side by side and never look at them – there is still as much street action as ever to keep you occupied. Sitting at the bar is also a favourite with regulars who all seem to know the staff intimately.
Live music keeps the joint jumping these days and the cocktails are as good as they ever were.
While Gypsy’s bohemian element might be long gone, the new generation of locals have embraced her new incarnation, and they seem to be pretty happy with it.
