Damask Bar

Escape from the Brunswick Street masses at this little oasis in the heart of Fitzroy.

Editorial

Brunswick Street may have changed considerably over the years, much to the chagrin of diehard locals, but most of them have moved to Brunswick now. For those who have stayed, there are two types, those who enjoy continuously complaining about the loss of their beloved suburb to yuppies and tourists, and those who have quietly accepted what was always inevitable. The new locals, however, have embraced the changes, and many of them have embraced Damask.

Damask is the perfect place to take the parents to show them how very gentrified Fitzroy has become. Firstly, it hovers above the masses by being located above the Fitz Café. Great for escaping the hoards of teenagers and backpackers in search of cheap food, beer and live music. Secondly, the furnishings are not a mish mash of St Vinnies couches, Brotherhood of St Laurence lamps and $2 Dollar shop knick knacks. Circular window-side booths add a club-like elegance, as do the red leather armchairs and marble topped tables. The damask patterned bar is a similarly stylish fixture, and the outdoor deck is kept simple, with lots of wood, some greenery and the odd Ishka candle lamp.

While the cocktails are expertly made, during the summer months choose one of their cocktails jugs and park yourself on that deck. Their drinks menus are not extensive, but they are extremely well thought out. This is a place that absolutely knows what its doing and you’ll find yourself coming back with or without the folks.
