Can we ever get enough burlesque? It seems not. It’s been well over a decade since Melbourne re-embraced the saucy art-from, and it shows no sign of diminishing in its popularity. Not only is there a number of successful burlesque troupes, there is an entire venue dedicated to it, and, given Fitzroy’s bohemian history, it is not surprising the Burlesque Bar has made Melbourne’s first suburb its home.
The setting is suitably luxurious and lavish. Antique lamps, baroque armchairs, gilt mirrors, and of course plenty of velvet. The chequerboard stage is a standout feature and the low lighting adds to the sultry mood as well as being very considerate.
The bar is only open four nights a week, but boy, do they pack a lot into their working week. Thursday’s they start off rather tamely with a life drawing class with a difference, as in the bar’s burlesque stars are the actual models. Friday and Saturday sees Cirque De Femmes, which is a smorgasboard of burlesque beauties and cabaret, and Sundays are home to a show that is reported to be ‘too adult to review’!
Hen’s nights and birthday parties are a favourite and is has to be said that the staff are some of the friendliest in the strip. The drinks are reasonably priced and it was noted that the crowd makes good use of this.
The courtyard is also ideal if, through the course of the night you need to collect yourself, which is completely on the cards.

What a fun night! The dancers were amazing and super sexy, and the bar staff were really friendly and great at cocktails!

Brilliant night out! Fantastic show, fun times and great staff! Everyone was really friendly and made us feel welcome. We partied till late and would definitely go back.
