Black Cat Bar
Editorial
By day, le chat noir plays host to a litter of cuddly hipsters. When they’re not playing with balls of wool and ordering “ironic” milk drinks, they’re enjoying the spectacle of each other. By night, pussy scuttles off into a different direction; what was a casual café becomes a boho Brunswick Street bar.
The Black Cat’s night vibe is not at all at odds with the site’s former function as a cabaret bar. There’s a sort of melancholy intimacy that takes hold in this place after dark. This is great news for the late-twenty-something chic geeks who tend to congregate therein; if you’re looking for a faintly emo singles bar where boys and girls do little more than exchange self-effacing glances and giggle, this is your high-end dive bar.
Speaking of high-end, drinks don’t come cheap here. The place might look down at heel, but proprietors are doing their level best over the bar to make the escalating Fitzroy rent. Basic drinks are not at all basically priced.
Fans of al fresco drinking, AKA hopelessly addicted smokers, will find solace in the little outdoor area. And, all those other cats will find solace in each other.
